Canadian Individual Tax Returns

No matter your situation in life, our team ensures that you and your family are taxed as efficiently as possible, minimizing your overall tax burden where possible and ensuring that you are not surprised about any tax-related issues.

We do this by ensuring that any available deductions and credits are utilized on your income tax returns and by keeping you aware of any benefit programs you may be eligible for.

While preparing your returns, we’ll also review your situation and offer any suggestions (if applicable) on restructuring your affairs to minimize your overall tax burden (particularly for our clients that are business owners or cross-border tax filers).

Operating for more than 40 years with a team that has decades of experience, we assist numerous individuals with:

  • Foreign tax credits
  • Self-employment schedules
  • Rental schedules
  • Foreign property reporting
  • Foreign affiliate reporting
  • Responding to CRA reviews

Please see the sections below to read about some of the most common situations that we can assist with. We also work in conjunction with the other professionals in your life such as lawyers and financial planners to ensure that your tax affairs are organized in as efficient a manner as possible.

Cross-Border Income Tax Filers

Canadian residents who work in the U.S. are required to file a U.S. tax return to report their income. Failure to file may result in significant penalties, interest charges, and legal repercussions.

Likewise, American residents who work in Canada are required to file a Canadian tax return to report their Canadian source income.

We can help you avoid costly penalties and mitigate and/or eliminate any double taxation through the application of relevant U.S. tax code provisions, Canadian Income Tax Act provisions, tax treaty applications, and Foreign Tax Credits.

Please see our section on U.S. Tax Returns if you believe you that you may have to file a U.S. return, or contact our office and one of our tax professionals would be more than happy to assist you with any cross-border tax issues.

Newcomers to Canada

Immigrating to Canada can already be challenging enough without having to learn the complexities of Canadian tax legislation. In particular, immigrants to Canada must file an additional form to become eligible for some of the tax benefit programs offered through the CRA and Service Canada.

We can assist in preparing this form for you, or consult on various immigration tax issues, such as revised cost basis calculations and tracking for any assets you own at the time of your immigration.

Please contact our office and one of our tax professionals would be more than happy to assist in preparing these tax returns and forms for you, or in helping you to understand your obligations under Canadian income tax legislation.

Self-Employment

Self-employed individuals face added complexity on their annual income tax returns due to the reporting of their business income. There are also various GST/HST issues that come in to play.

Our office has been assisting self-employed individuals for decades to ensure that they are meeting their reporting requirements while ensuring they are taxed as efficiently as possible. We have particular experience for ride-share drivers and delivery services (i.e. Uber/DoorDash/etc.), realtors and real-estate agents, general contractors, tradesmen, and professionals, but would be more than happy to assist any self-employed businesses.

Short-Haul and Long-Haul Truckers

Short-haul and long-haul truckers have added complexity in reporting some of their employment expenses when filing their annual tax returns in Canada. We can assist you on how to maintain proper documentation throughout the year and then ensure that you are claiming all applicable deductions on your annual income tax return.

Non-Resident Rental Property Owners

Non-residents of Canada who own rental properties in Canada have additional filing requirements that would not otherwise impact Canadian-resident owners. This includes the annual filing of an elective income tax return under Section 216 of the Income Tax Act of Canada and the filing of Form NR4 to report the taxpayer’s annual rental income.

The non-resident taxpayer may also benefit from the yearly filing of Form NR6 which may reduce some or all of the withholding tax on the non-resident taxpayer’s rental income.

In limited circumstances, we can act as a non-resident’s Canadian agent (required for any non-resident who receives rental income) for a flat annual fee.

Please contact our office and one of our tax professionals would be more than happy to assist in preparing these tax returns and forms for you, or in helping you to understand your obligations under Canadian income tax legislation.

PLEASE NOTE: Non-resident owners of Canadian rental properties may be affected by the Underused Housing Tax (effective 2022). Please see our section on Underused Housing Tax to learn more.
